Angus Young est né le 31 mars 1955 à Glasgow en Écosse. Il est le dernier de la famille. En 1963, il quitte l'Écosse avec sa famille pour aller vivre en Australie dans la banlieue de Sydney. Là-bas, il quitte l'école dès l'âge de 15 ans et préfère travailler (il devient maquettiste dans une entreprise de magazines à caractère pornographique) pour pouvoir payer du matériel de professionnel et devenir rocker. Il jouait déjà de la guitare depuis l'âge de quatre ans. Il crée son groupe Tantrum avant de rejoindre AC/DC qu'avait créé son frère Malcolm Young.Il est classé 96e au classement "the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".

Il joue sur des modèles de Gibson SG qui est sa guitare préférée. Selon la "légende", l'habit d'écolier qu'il porte sur scène lui vient d'une idée de sa sœur. En effet, quand il était jeune, après l'école, il ne prenait pas le temps de se changer pour aller jouer de la guitare. Elle lui a donc dit « Pourquoi ne garderais-tu pas ton costume d'écolier pendant les shows ? ». Et depuis, il enfile cette tenue à tous les concerts.

Il s'est marié avec Ellen Young, une Hollandaise et vit en Hollande quand il n'est pas en tournée.

Angus est aujourd'hui considéré comme l'un des plus grands guitaristes de sa catégorie, et son jeu puissant et efficace à incité de nombreuses personnes à commencer l'apprentissage de la guitare. Il est de plus un performer sur scène.
